JE Dunn constructed a two-story, 45,900 SF vertical addition over the existing emergency department and medical/surgical area at Fairview Southdale Hospital. The new space houses 52 inpatient observation rooms, facilitating the hospital's shift towards single-patient rooms. The project also included the build-out of 8,000 SF for 12 patient rooms on the existing second floor.
The hospital was occupied for the duration of the project, with a busy COVID-19 ward located directly below the construction. The JE Dunn team used BIM to coordinate MEP and structural tie-ins with the existing facilities, prioritizing infection control efforts. We emphasized communication as a means of coordinating all team members and stakeholders, including using high-quality graphics to inform hospital staff of planned area and MEP outages. We coordinated outage requests and utility shutdowns, ensuring the hospital operations team was always aware of where and when work would impact the existing facility.
