University of Minnesota Recreation and Wellness Center Expansion

The student recreation center addition and remodel includes fitness areas, weights, locker rooms, climbing wall, multi-purpose rooms, gyms, indoor running track, offices, and cafe. The project also includes a two story link from the existing recreation center to the addition.

JE Dunn completed in-house 3D Building Information Modeling of the entire project, and merged the model with the M/E design models in order to identify conflicts and determine the best solution.

Through construction of an exterior wall mock-up that incorporated all materials used on the building exterior, we determined that the heavy steel angles at the perimeter of curtainwall shown on the plans would not be required and less costly light gauge steel angles could be used in their place. This change saved money and eliminated one trade from working at the exterior of the building.
