Texas A&M University - Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building

JE Dunn recently began construction of a $95 million research facility at Texas A&M University. The Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building (ILSB) will encompass 219,000 SF. The building will provide classroom, auditorium, and office space in addition to research laboratories and specialized support areas for interdisciplinary research initiatives. The project is being designed and constructed on a fast-track schedule with completion expected in the summer of 2008.

The building will include 95,000 SF of modular laboratories and research offices to support chemical, biological and computational work. Laboratory and lab support facilities will utilize modular casework to permit reconfiguration based on evolving research directions. Our construction management team has worked closely with the design team and University to develop a high performance, sustainable laboratory facility within a constrained budget and extremely aggressive design and construction timeline. The project is targeting LEED silver designation. The building design required the reevaluation of University laboratory standards for fume hood performance and design, central plant design, process water reclamation, and the use of day-lighting in a laboratory setting, among other things. Preconstruction planning included an extensive effort to analyze sustainable lab systems from a cost/construction standpoint.

As the first sustainable building on the A&M campus, the ILSB will redefine the energy and performance standards for campus research facilities and will serve as the sustainable benchmark for the University.
