Georgia Power Company Day Care

Atlanta, Georgia

In the Spring of 2008, RJ Griffin & Company General Contractors began two projects that were constructed with the goal of attaining a company first - LEED certification. The Georgia Power Day Cares in Atlanta, Georgia and McDonough, Georgia were awarded on November 15, 2006 and from that day forward, the design team at Heery International and R.J. Griffin worked vigorously to achieve the highest level of LEED certification possible.

Located on the campus of the Georgia Power Corporate Headquarters in Atlanta, the downtown day care facility stands 2-stories tall with a total of 25,000 SF. This steel structure was built with glass and brick skin and both metal sloping and flat built-up roofing. The project features highly efficient mechanical and glass systems, a rainwater recovery system, recycled steel, recycled drywall, rapidly renewable flooring and an HVAC system that operates at an 80% increase in energy efficiency. Open space was maximized and reflective roofing and hardscape were provided. The team maintained a recycling rate above 90% throughout the entirety of the job and, through the efforts of their suppliers, was able to replace virgin materials with recycled ones by 40% of the project costs. The project's site also allows for more fuel-efficient transportation, as it is convenient to a MARTA train station and encourages parking for car pools, van pools and low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles.
