Denver Zoo Asian Tropics Exhibit

JE Dunn Construction provided Preconstruction Services for the Asian Tropics Exhibit. The Asian Tropics Exhibit will include development of new elephant, rhino, tapir, and Asian species exhibits and various zoo services over 10 acres in the south central area of the existing zoo campus. The existing 10-acre site within the Denver Zoo campus will be cleared including the demolition of approximately 15 existing structures. Most of the existing underground utilities will be removed or abandoned in place. 675 LF of an existing 102" brick storm main running through the project site will be replaced and realigned during the construction. Major structures within this exhibit will include: a 18,800 SF elephant holding building, a 11,050 SF rhino/ tapir holding building, a 1,036 SF gibbon holding building, a 10,775 SF "Asian pavilion" (multi-species holding and indoor exhibit including a hornbill holding building), two water filtration buildings (4,300 SF total), a 1400 SF hay barn, a 2526 SF café, and a 1258 SF restroom facility. The major site work will include five large animal yards (2.6 acres total), several smaller animal yards, two meshed exhibits, four water features totaling 36,800 SF and 750,000 gallons, water quality detention ponds, and 64,000 SF of pedestrian pathways, and other miscellaneous shade structures.

Unique features:

  • The Zoo will apply for LEED certification for the elephant holding building, the rhino/tapir holding building, the Asian pavilion, and the related site development. Demolition will by regulated to comply with LEED requirements.
  • Thirty historic trees will be protected during the demolition construction activities, and 27 trees will be relocated within the project boundaries or the Zoo campus.
