University of Minnesota Education Science Building

Minneapolis, Minnesota

JE Dunn recently completed the historic renovation of the 68,000 SF former Mineral Resources Research Center building originally built in the historic Knoll District of the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota. The building was used as a mining experiment lab from the 1920's when it was built until the 1970's when the mining school closed the building for use.

As Construction Manager, JE Dunn restored this building to its 1924 appearance, preserving and incorporating significant elements of the original building including overhead cranes. The exterior renovation included the replacement of windows and skylights and restoration of the exterior faade. The renovated interior included the addition of a cast-in-place structural floor in a two-story atrium area. The Education Sciences Building provides specialized education laboratory space, group meeting rooms for pre K-12 outreach, and a variety of modern office spaces for faculty, research and teaching assistants. The building houses three units of the College of Education and Human Development that pursue research and outreach in the areas of reading and literacy, special education, accountability and assessment, and early childhood education.
