JE Dunn is in the construction phase of the renovation and expansion to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) and large animal teaching hospitals at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. The $35 million project will include 118,400 SF of new space, renovation of the existing biosecurity area within the VDL and expansion of existing diagnostic and evaluation facilities.
Initial estimates of construction cost based on preliminary design drawings were approximately $39 million. Our construction management specialists worked closely with the design team and University staff to define and evaluate alternates that were needed to bring the project within the available $35 million budget.
New construction will include clean space and a BSL-3 laboratory, surgical suites with medical gas and vacuum systems, a necropsy area, holding stalls, and wards with extensive watering and waste collection/drainage systems. JE Dunn MEP staff has worked side by side with the design engineers to maximize the constructibility and efficiency of the mechanical and electrical systems. This has included both the systems within the building and the connections needed to allow the building to be tied into the existing campus chilled water and hot water loops.
