Pioneer Courthouse Seismic Upgrade

Portland, Oregon

Originally built in 1875, the Pioneer Courthouse covers an entire city block in Portland, Oregon. JE Dunn - NW completed a seismic upgrade which enables the historic building to withstand a magnitude 8.5 earthquake.

Unique features:

  • This is the first friction pendulum base isolation system in Portland and one of only fifty in the entire country.
  • The friction pendulum base isolation system works by separating the building from the earth. A "moat" surrounds the building, detaching it from the ground at the perimeter and allowing it to move freely up to 18" in each direction.
  • All work happens under the building, therefore leaving the actual building intact.
