Pioneer Presidents Place

Salina, Kansas

Pioneer Presidents' Place, a preservation project that converted a historic junior high in Salina, Kansas, into affordable senior housing, has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification through the U.S. Green Building Council. It is the fifth project in Kansas to receive LEED certification and one of only a few historic projects nationwide to receive such a designation.

The historic junior high was built as two separate schools, known as Lincoln and Roosevelt, on one campus between 1915 and 1925. The Lincoln was cited by the Kansas Guide to Architecture as one of the "best examples of Commercial Prairie Style architecture in the state." The January 2006 conversion has resulted in a 61-unit, environmentally friendly apartment complex.

In its new design, energy conservation was a key component. LEED standards that were met include a high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, recycled content, on-site storage of rainwater for use in landscape watering, and a concrete rather than asphalt parking lot which cuts heat radiation into the atmosphere. Low-emission, vapor-reducing paint was used during interior finish.
