USACE Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility
Fort Leavenworth, KS
Client: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District
Architect: AECOM
Size: 225,000 SF
Completion: 2010

The Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility replaces smaller prisons at Lackland Air Base in Texas, Fort Knox in Kentucky, and Fort Sill in Oklahoma as part of the Defense Base Realignment and Closure program.

The 45-acre facility houses 512 beds and includes a warehouse, an engineering and maintenance building and a covered vehicle storage facility. This project has the added dimension of requiring anti-terrorism force protection.

JE Dunn self-performed concrete, masonry, precast erection, and rough/finish carpentry.

Building Information Modeling was used extensively on the project. Modeling was completed on the structural precast, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and security electronics.

LEED Silver is required on all Department of Army projects. The requirement is that the government self-certify that all buildings meet LEED Silver with a select few projects becoming actually certified by USGBC. This project is a self-certified project.
