Carleton College Residence Halls
Northfield, MN
Client: Carleton College
Architect: LHB Architects
Size: 92,000 SF
Completion: 2009
Carleton College student residence halls are two 4-story buildings connected by a tunnel and offer 200 beds in suite and dormitory style. The halls, named Cassat Hall and Memorial Hall, are of environmentally sustainable design and earned LEED Gold certification. Sustainable elements include radiant in-floor heating, solar thermal hot water system, motion-controlled lighting, use of recycled materials, low-flow water fixtures, and rainwater harvest for irrigation. 90 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills.
A comprehensive 'residential-life' planning process was used to determine residence hall requirements, ultimately creating community between residents on different levels. The buildings were also designed to mesh well with the surrounding neighborhood.
