La Palma is a medium security prison broken into three compounds. There are a total of 20 buildings exceeding 594,000 SF on an 89-acre site. A total of 3,060 beds were delivered three months ahead of schedule.
Phase One of the project, consisting of 1,020 beds, was turned over two weeks ahead of schedule allowing the first inmates to transfer in July 2008. Phase Two included support building and completed in August. The final 1,020 beds were completed in December 2008. The project finished three months ahead of its target completion date of March 2009.
At the time of its completion, La Palma was the largest project undertaken by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA).
