Georgia Infirmary is recognized as the first hospital for African Americans in the nation. In 1974 it became a day center for stroke patients. State and federal government policy was greatly influenced by the work in independent living for chronically ill and disabled people; Georgia Infirmary is credited for leading the way in this field.
As part of the St. Joseph's/Chandler Hospital system, a major revitalization project was begun in May 2003. Construction began on a 4,000 SF Adult Day Health Center which would connect to the existing structure. Major renovations were performed on the original building, including HVAC upgrades, updated lighting, new elevators, and reconfigured office spaces and finishes. Today, pieces of history can be seen in the breezeway that connects the two structures, bridging old and new, and creating a fantastic environment to allow for independence for the elderly and disabled.
