The Shriners Hospital for Children was completed in two phases: Phase I, the hospital, and Phase II, Administration and Family Housing. This hospital replaced the old 40-bed Shriners Honolulu Children's Hospital which opened in 1923.
The new 2-story hospital includes inpatient care beds, surgery, outpatient clinic, imaging, radiology, physical therapy, orthotics manufacturing, nutrition services and other support programs. Administrative space includes a new conference center featuring a 100-seat auditorium with two meeting rooms and support spaces. In addition, the new Family Quarters Facility consists of 17 sleeping rooms with toilet/shower and a common area including kitchen, dining, living, office, and laundry room.
The Preconstruction phase involved close cooperation between the design team and JE Dunn to develop the best approach to sequenced construction that allowed the hospital to remain operational throughout the construction period. Preconstruction services included developing schedules, completing cost studies for design alternates, and providing constructability and value engineering studies.
