Children's Healthcare of Atlanta
Atlanta, GA
Client: Children's Healthcare of Atlanta
Architect: various
Size: 550,000 SF
Completion: 2004
Since 2004, we have been providing construction services to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Notable among the many projects was the first phase of the campus expansion. This work required close communication and coordination as all entrances to the hospital were disrupted at one point requiring patient flow routes to be reworked. All site utilities were rerouted without disruption, including fiber optic networks. Highly specialized equipment was installed including an intra-operative IMRI system mounted on ceiling rails allowing the unit to move between operating rooms.
A four-level parking structure accommodates 395 spaces transporting pedestrians via five elevators, four stairwells and two ramps, one of which utilizes radiant heat to prevent icing. A portion of the parking deck is adjacent to the existing hospital which required shoring and underpinning in order to construct the deck. A large central energy plant is situated within the structure and a large, 2 ½-story truck dock is located on the lowest level.
Most recently, The Zone, a 3,500 therapeutic play environment for children, was renovated. Featuring Wii play stations, the Garth Brooks music stage with equipment, and a concession stand area, The Zone offers patients and their families an escape from the stress of illness and time in the hospital. The exterior has a koi pond, a rubberized basketball court, and putting green space. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is home to the sixth Zone in the country, and it is the first Zone to incorporate an outdoor setting.
