This new full-service medical campus is situated on a 74-acre site and consists of a 364,550 SF, 7-story patient tower and a 14,744 SF, 2-story central plant. The 180-bed medical center collaboration began in early 2004, with JE Dunn spending months on preconstruction tasks such as estimating, budgeting, and formulating the project scope. "We took that collaborative approach to a new level, envisioning and carrying out a project that posed unique challenges and will enable a new model of health care delivery", said JE Dunn's Assistant Vice President Vance McMillan. During construction, the hospital realized they had an opportunity to improve the way they deliver healthcare to their patients, which is reflected in the building's structure. The hospital also aimed to lean heavily on digital technology rather than the paper-based records, which Microsoft recently gave the hospital a $250,000 gift to help nurture its technology efforts.
Early on, the parties involved with this project scheduled regular meetings to ensure that even the minor details were being communicated across the board. "We felt it was important to have a lot of communication, including a common project vision and team goals", said Curt Wuesthoff, a member of Mercy Medical Center's program management team from Northstar Management Company. The team established a grading system to measure things such as: communication, collaboration, responsiveness, and the quality of information being shared, to ensure the quality was at the highest level. The project was completed on-time and under-budget with minimal problems along the way.
The extensive site work included new development requirements such as major utility extensions, new roads, and the construction of two bridges. As a result of JE Dunn's comprehensive safety program and the supervision of a full-time safety director, the project completed over 420 consecutive work days without a lost time accident. In addition, sustainability practices and LEED principles were incorporated throughout the project's duration. » Back to Press and News Archive |
